LOOK BEYOND THE FINAL NUMBER

Understand the offer before accepting it.

A total-loss offer can raise questions about comparable vehicles, condition adjustments, endorsements and the amount still owing on a vehicle. We help separate the valuation issue from the other parts of the claim.

Review how the value was calculated

Start with the valuation report and the full settlement breakdown. Vehicle year, trim, kilometres, equipment, condition and the dates of comparable listings can all be relevant to checking the insurer’s calculation.

We can help prepare a comparison schedule, identify apparent errors and submit supporting records in a form that is easy to review. An asking price is not automatically proof of a completed sale or the correct settlement value.

Check the policy and the payment structure

The applicable coverage and endorsements need to be read with the policy in force for the loss. A replacement-cost or depreciation-related endorsement should not be assumed from the vehicle’s age alone.

The finance balance and the vehicle’s insured value are different questions. Any GAP product also has its own wording and eligibility conditions. We can help identify the documents needed to assess a disagreement without promising that every shortfall is insured.

Keep the related expenses in view

Rental, towing and storage issues can develop while value is being discussed. Keep invoices and written communications about authorization or cut-off dates. Ask for clear instructions rather than assume all continuing expenses will be paid.

Before signing a settlement or release, understand what issues it resolves. Depending on the dispute and applicable wording, advice may include a valuation response, an available appraisal process or another permitted dispute-resolution route.

Have a deadline? Include the date in your initial inquiry. Do not assume a consultation request, negotiation or complaint pauses a legal deadline.

Questions about this service

Does the insurer have to pay the remaining loan balance?

The loan balance is not necessarily the measure of the insured loss. Review the policy, finance agreement and any separate GAP coverage.

Should I accept payment while disputing the amount?

Get advice on the particular offer and any release or settlement wording before deciding. Do not assume acceptance leaves every other issue open.
